Description
This Danish commemorative stamp, Scott 1323, issued in 2005, honors Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875), Denmark’s most celebrated writer and one of the world’s great storytellers. The stamp was released to mark the 200th anniversary of Andersen’s birth.
The design features a finely engraved profile portrait of Andersen, paired with a facsimile of his signature. The understated monochrome style reflects Denmark’s long tradition of elegant, literary-themed stamp design and underscores Andersen’s enduring cultural importance. His fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Emperor’s New Clothes, have been translated into more than 150 languages and remain central to global children’s literature.
The stamp was engraved by Martin Mörck, one of Europe’s most respected modern stamp engravers, and printed with exceptional clarity and detail.
