Description
Czechoslovakia – Scott #414–415 (1950) Used – Božena Němcová Centenary Issue
Issued in 1950, this elegant two-stamp set commemorates the 130th anniversary of the birth of Božena Němcová (1820–1862), one of the most beloved figures in Czech literature and a pioneer of national romanticism. Best known for her novel Babička (The Grandmother), Němcová’s work celebrated rural Czech life, folk traditions, and the dignity of ordinary people—earning her an enduring place in the country’s cultural identity.
The stamps feature a finely engraved portrait of Němcová above quill and manuscript motifs, designed by K. Svolinský and J. Mráček, whose artistry exemplifies the exceptional engraving tradition of mid-century Czechoslovak philately.
