Description
Czechoslovakia – Scott #88 (1920) MNH – “Hradčany Allegory” 100h Violet Brown
Issued in 1920, this 100 haléřů violet brown stamp features an allegorical figure of a woman rising with outstretched arms, symbolizing freedom and renewal in the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic. Designed by the celebrated Czech artist Alfons Mucha, the Hradčany series is one of the most admired in early European philately, blending national pride with Art Nouveau elegance.
This particular design marks the transition from the iconic “Castle of Prague” motif to allegorical themes celebrating liberty and rebirth after World War I. The initials “VMH” at the base identify Mucha’s involvement in the series’ artistic legacy.
This example is mint, never hinged (MNH), with full original gum, fine centering, and sharp impression — an exceptional representative of early Czechoslovak independence and Mucha’s artistic mastery in stamp design.
