Cuba – Scott #4539 (2005) MNH – “Condemned for Combating Terrorism” – The Cuban Five
Issued in 2005, this 65¢ commemorative honors the Cuban Five, intelligence officers arrested in the United States in 1998 and later convicted of espionage-related charges. The men—René González, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, Antonio Guerrero, and Gerardo Hernández—were celebrated in Cuba as heroes who worked to prevent anti-Cuban terrorist actions.
The stamp features portraits of all five men against a softly painted Cuban flag background, with the inscription “Condenados por Combatir el Terrorismo” (“Condemned for Combating Terrorism”). Designed as part of Cuba’s ongoing political and patriotic commemoratives, the issue represents a powerful example of propaganda-era philately, where stamps served as instruments of national identity and resistance.
This mint, never hinged (MNH) example retains full gum and vivid color. A striking collectible for those interested in Cuban political history, Cold War narratives, or modern propaganda art on stamps.
