Description
Berlin – Scott #9NB152, MNH (1978 Christmas Souvenir Sheet)
This 1978 Berlin Weihnachtsmarke (Christmas Stamp) is one of the most visually striking issues of the postwar Berlin charity series. The souvenir sheet features sacred stained-glass imagery rendered in exquisite color and detail, continuing Berlin’s annual tradition of combining religious art with a humanitarian message.
Design
The central 30 + 15 Pf semi-postal stamp portrays the Adoration of the Magi, a radiant Nativity scene adapted from a medieval stained-glass window at the Church of St. Mary in Lübeck. The figures of Mary and the Christ Child are shown with warm gold halos, contrasted by deep blue and red robes.
Above the image appears the inscription:
“Frohe Weihnachten für alle” — Merry Christmas for all.
