Description

This Belgium semi-postal stamp pair, Scott #B1069-70, was issued in 1980 as part of a charity series featuring botanical illustrations by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, one of the most celebrated floral artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As semi-postals, the stamps combine regular postage with a surtax, the additional funds supporting social welfare causes.

The designs reproduce Redouté’s detailed studies of Bengal roses, showcasing his signature style of precise linework, delicate coloration, and scientific accuracy balanced with artistic elegance. Each flower is presented against a clean white background, allowing the form, petals, and foliage to stand out clearly, much like plates from classical botanical folios.

The inscriptions credit Redouté directly, underscoring the artistic and historical importance of the imagery. The restrained composition and soft pastel tones reflect Redouté’s enduring influence on botanical illustration and make the stamps visually cohesive as a pair.

This complete set is offered mint never hinged (MNH), with full original gum and no hinge marks or disturbance. MNH examples are popular with collectors of flowers, botanical art, and Belgian semi-postals.
