Description
This British Bechuanaland provisional stamp, Scott #35, was issued in 1885 during the short-lived existence of the British Bechuanaland protectorate. The stamp consists of a Cape of Good Hope issue overprinted “BRITISH BECHUANALAND”, a practical solution adopted while dedicated colonial stamps were being prepared.
The underlying design features the seated allegorical figure of Hope, a classic motif of Cape of Good Hope stamps, framed by intricate geometric line work and corner ornaments. The bold typographic overprint clearly asserts the new territorial authority, transforming an existing colonial stamp into a provisional issue for use in British Bechuanaland.
Such overprints are characteristic of transitional postal administrations and are highly valued by collectors for their historical significance. They document the rapid political and administrative changes occurring in southern Africa during the late 19th century.
This example is offered used, bearing a clear circular postal cancellation consistent with genuine contemporary usage. Used copies are typical for this issue and are sought after by collectors of classic British colonial stamps, overprints, and African postal history.
