Description
Bavaria Scott #O23 (1919) — Used
This 10 Pfennig carmine Official stamp (Scott #O23) was issued in 1919 under the newly formed Free State of Bavaria (Volksstaat Bayern). It features the classic Dienstmarke design of the Bavarian coat of arms supported by two lions, overprinted in black with the words “Volksstaat Bayern” to denote its use by the republican government that replaced the monarchy.
These overprinted Official stamps were part of Bavaria’s administrative transition following World War I and the abdication of King Ludwig III. They represent the early days of the Bavarian Republic, a politically volatile period that included the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic before the state stabilized under the Weimar Republic.
This example is postally used, showing a clear circular date cancellation with strong color and legible overprint.
Condition: Used; fine centering; crisp “Volksstaat Bayern” overprint; deep carmine shade.
Issued: 1919
Color: Carmine
Denomination: 10 Pfennig
Design Theme: Bavarian coat of arms with lions; overprint “Volksstaat Bayern”
Purpose: Official correspondence of the new Bavarian republican government
Historical Note: Transitional Dienstmarke overprint marking the end of Bavaria’s monarchy and the rise of the People’s State after World War I.
