Bavaria Scott #O13 (1916) — Used
This 20 Pfennig blue Official stamp (Scott #O13) was issued in 1916 for exclusive use on official government correspondence in the Kingdom of Bavaria. Like the rest of the Dienstmarke series, it features the royal Bavarian coat of arms — a crowned shield quartered with the white-and-blue lozenges of Bavaria, supported by two lions — beneath the proud inscription “DIENSTMARKE” (“Official Stamp”).
These stamps were not sold to the public and were used by ministries, courts, and state offices during the final years of the monarchy. The elegant engraving reflects Bavaria’s longstanding tradition of fine stamp design and heraldic pride, even as the nation faced the final stages of World War I.
This example is postally used, showing a light, legible circular date cancel and strong impression.
Condition: Used; fine centering; clear cancel; deep blue shade.
Issued: 1916
Color: Blue
Denomination: 20 Pfennig
Design Theme: Bavarian coat of arms with lions and crown; “DIENSTMARKE” inscription
Purpose: Official correspondence of government offices
Historical Note: Part of the last Dienstmarke series issued under King Ludwig III before the monarchy’s fall and the transition to the Free State of Bavaria.
