Description
Bavaria Scott #B2 (1919) — Used
This 15 Pfennig red semi-postal issue (Scott #B2) was released in 1919 by the Freistaat Bayern (Free State of Bavaria) to raise funds “für Kriegsbeschädigte” — for war-disabled persons. It was one of the first charity stamps of post–World War I Germany, embodying the state’s effort to support wounded veterans and citizens affected by the conflict.
The overprint reads “5 Pf. für Kriegsbeschädigte / Freistaat Bayern”, indicating a 5 Pfennig surcharge on top of the original postal value, with proceeds directed toward relief and rehabilitation. Issued shortly after the fall of the Bavarian monarchy, this series marked the shift from royal symbolism to the new republican “Free State” identity.
This example is postally used, with a clear cancellation that leaves the overprint fully legible.
Condition: Used; strong color; clear overprint and cancel; fine centering.
Issued: 1919
Color: Red with black overprint
Denomination: 15 Pfennig + 5 Pf surcharge
Design Theme: King Ludwig III definitive with overprint for war relief
