Bavaria – Scott #38 (1881) is part of the Pfennig Coat of Arms definitive series, marking the transition from the kreuzer currency to the decimal-based pfennig system following Bavaria’s integration into the German Empire. The stamp features the elegant Bavarian coat of arms, supported by two lions and crowned, printed in light green with clear Gothic lettering and intricate frame detail. Produced by typography on unwatermarked paper, these issues maintained Bavaria’s distinctive identity even under imperial oversight. This example is used, with a sharp circular cancellation, excellent color contrast, and good centering—a fine example of late 19th-century Bavarian philately.
