Description

Bavaria Scott #261 (1920) — Used

This 40 Pfennig brown stamp (Scott #261) originates from Bavaria’s final Allegory of Agriculture and Industry series and was overprinted “Deutsches Reich” in 1920 to signify the state’s postal transition into the unified German Reichspost.

The design depicts a laborer with hammer and anvil, symbolizing industry, productivity, and reconstruction in post–World War I Germany. The overprint officially marked the end of Bavaria’s independent postal issues, making this series a poignant close to the region’s long philatelic tradition.

This example is postally used, with a neat circular cancellation that leaves the design and overprint clearly visible.

Condition: Used; fine centering; crisp cancel; strong color and detail.
Issued: 1920
Color: Brown with black overprint
Denomination: 40 Pfennig
Design Theme: Allegory of Agriculture and Industry
Overprint: “Deutsches Reich”
Historical Note: Marks Bavaria’s full postal unification with Germany at the close of the Weimar transitional period.
