Description

Bavaria Scott #254 (1920) — Used

This 20 Mark black violet high-value stamp (Scott #254) is one of the final Bavarian-origin issues, printed in 1920 and overprinted “Deutsches Reich” to signify the absorption of Bavaria’s postal system into the national Reichspost.

The design, known as the Allegory of Peace and Prosperity, features a classical female figure holding a laurel branch and wreath, symbolizing renewal and national unity after World War I. Its elegant Art Nouveau circular frame and sculptural composition make it one of the most beautiful and symbolic transitional designs in German philately.

This example is postally used, showing a crisp circular cancel that enhances the contrast and legibility of the overprint.
