Description

Bavaria Scott #239 (1920) — Used

This 10 Pfennig orange stamp (Scott #239) is a transitional issue from 1920, originally printed for the Allegory of Agriculture and Industry series (Scott #238–246) and later overprinted “Deutsches Reich” to indicate the full postal integration of Bavaria into the German Reichspost.

The overprint officially ended Bavaria’s long tradition of semi-independent stamp production, making this one of the last Bavarian issues to appear under its own name. The original design—featuring a muscular laborer with plow and cityscape—symbolized national reconstruction following the devastation of World War I.

This example is postally used, with a clean, legible circular cancel that leaves both the overprint and design visible.

Condition: Used; fine centering; clear overprint; clean circular cancel.
Issued: 1920
Color: Orange with black overprint
Denomination: 10 Pfennig
Design: Allegory of Agriculture and Industry
Overprint: “Deutsches Reich” (German Empire)
Historical Note: Marks the absorption of Bavaria’s postal system into the national Reichspost.
