Description
Bavaria Scott #237 (1920) — Used
This 20 Pfennig on 3 Pfennig brown stamp (Scott #237) is a surcharge issue from 1920, created during the final phase of Bavaria’s independent postal administration before integration into the German Reichspost. The overprint features four bold blue “20” numerals applied to revalue earlier stock from the Bavarian Coat of Arms definitive series.
Surcharged issues like this were produced as a temporary measure to meet new postal rates in the early Weimar period, when inflation and economic instability required constant adjustments to postage values. This makes the issue a fascinating example of the transition from regional to national control in postwar Germany.
This example is postally used, with a clean circular cancel and excellent contrast between the brown background and blue surcharge numerals.
Condition: Used; fine centering; light cancel; strong blue surcharge.
Issued: 1920
Color: Brown with blue “20” surcharge
Denomination: 20 Pfennig (on 3 Pfennig)
Design: Bavarian Coat of Arms definitive, revalued
Series: Surcharged definitives (Final issues of the Kingdom/Free State of Bavaria)
