Description
Bavaria Scott #198 (1919) — Used
This 20 Pfennig blue-green stamp (Scott #198) features the portrait of Prince Regent Luitpold, overprinted with the bold black inscription “Freistaat Bayern” (Free State of Bavaria). Issued in 1919, this overprint marked Bavaria’s political transformation following the fall of the German Empire and the end of the Bavarian monarchy.
The Freistaat Bayern series was produced during a short but pivotal transitional period when the region redefined itself as a republican state amid the turmoil of post–World War I Germany. Existing royal-portrait definitives were reused with new overprints, creating one of the most recognizable political issues in Bavarian philately.
This example is postally used, with a light circular cancel that leaves both the portrait and the Gothic overprint clear and well-centered.
