Description
Bavaria Scott #197 (1919) — Used
This 15 Pfennig rose red issue (Scott #197) features the “Freistaat Bayern” (Free State of Bavaria) overprint applied to the Prince Regent Luitpold definitive design. Issued in 1919, this series represents the final chapter of Bavarian philately before the region’s postal service was fully absorbed into that of the Weimar Republic.
The overprint signified Bavaria’s transformation from a constitutional monarchy into a republican “Free State” following the abdication of King Ludwig III and the brief revolutionary turmoil that culminated in the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic. These stamps remain tangible reminders of the political and social upheaval of post-World War I Germany.
This example is postally used, with a light cancel that leaves the portrait and bold black Gothic overprint clear and legible.
