Description
Bavaria Scott #182 (1919) — Used
This 20 Pfennig ultramarine stamp (Scott #182) was issued in 1919 during the turbulent post–World War I period, when Bavaria rebranded itself as the Free State of Bavaria (Freistaat Bayern). The overprint, in heavy Gothic script, was applied to leftover German Empire “Germania” definitive stamps—symbolically marking the end of monarchy and the beginning of a republican era under the new Weimar framework.
The design depicts Germania, the allegorical female figure representing the German nation, originally issued under imperial rule. The addition of Freistaat Bayern gives this issue special historical resonance, reflecting a state caught between revolution, reform, and reconstruction.
This example is postally used, bearing a clear circular cancellation that leaves the portrait and overprint well-defined.
