Description
Bavaria Scott #180 (1919) — Used
This 10 Pfennig carmine overprinted stamp from Bavaria (Scott #180) was issued in 1919, as part of the Freistaat Bayern (Free State of Bavaria) series. The bold Gothic overprint “Freistaat Bayern”—meaning Free State of Bavaria—was applied to leftover German Empire “Germania” issues to signify Bavaria’s transition from monarchy and revolution to a republican state within the newly formed Weimar Republic.
The underlying design, featuring Germania, symbolizes national endurance and unity. When paired with the Freistaat Bayern overprint, it captures a fascinating moment in German history—when imperial symbols were literally repurposed to serve a democratic republic.
This example is postally used, showing a well-struck circular cancel that leaves both the overprint and figure clearly visible.
