Description
Bavaria Scott #176 (1919) — Used
This 2½ Pfennig gray black overprinted issue from Bavaria (Scott #176) was released in 1919, marking the transition from the short-lived People’s State of Bavaria (Volksstaat Bayern) to the more moderate Free State of Bavaria (Freistaat Bayern). The black Gothic overprint “Freistaat Bayern”—translating to Free State of Bavaria—was applied to revalued German Empire “Germania” stamps, symbolizing Bavaria’s new republican identity within the emerging Weimar Republic.
Unlike the earlier Volksstaat overprints tied to revolutionary upheaval, these Freistaat issues reflect the consolidation of democratic governance after the fall of the Bavarian Soviet Republic. They represent Bavaria’s final step from political turmoil toward stability, while still retaining its distinctive regional identity.
This example is postally used, with a clean circular cancel that leaves the bold overprint and fine imperial design clearly visible.
