Bavaria Scott #157 (1919) — Used

This 5 Pfennig yellow green imperforate overprinted stamp from Bavaria (Scott #157) was issued in 1919 under the revolutionary People’s State of Bavaria (Volksstaat Bayern) government. The bold black Gothic overprint “Volksstaat Bayern”—translating to People’s State of Bavaria—was applied to leftover King Ludwig III definitive sheets after the fall of the monarchy.

Unlike the earlier perforated issues, this imperforate variety was produced during the height of political instability that swept Bavaria in the wake of World War I. These stamps circulated during the short-lived republican period that bridged the fall of the monarchy, the socialist uprising, and the brief existence of the Bavarian Soviet Republic.

This example is postally used, with a light cancel and sharp, clean margins typical of the imperforate printing.
