Description
Bavaria Scott #150 (1919) — Used
This 1 Mark brown overprinted high-denomination definitive from Bavaria (Scott #150) was issued in 1919, during the brief but historic People’s State of Bavaria (Volksstaat Bayern) period that followed the end of the monarchy. The bold black Gothic overprint “Volksstaat Bayern”—meaning People’s State of Bavaria—was applied to surplus King Ludwig III stamps after his abdication, marking the transition from royal authority to a republican administration.
As the highest value in the overprinted series, the 1 Mark stamp was typically used for heavy correspondence or registered mail. Its issue coincided with the political turmoil of early 1919, a time that saw Bavaria briefly transform from a monarchy to a socialist republic, and then to the chaotic Bavarian Soviet Republic before joining the Weimar Republic.
This example is postally used, showing a faint but legible cancel and a strong, clear overprint—an evocative survivor from a time of revolution and reform.
