Description
Bavaria Scott #142 (1919) — Used
This 25 Pfennig gray black overprinted definitive from Bavaria (Scott #142) was issued in 1919 during the revolutionary transformation from monarchy to republic. The bold Gothic overprint “Volksstaat Bayern”—meaning People’s State of Bavaria—was applied to remaining King Ludwig III stamps after his abdication, signifying the establishment of the short-lived People’s State of Bavaria following World War I.
The issue circulated at a time of extraordinary political turmoil, overlapping with the radical uprisings that briefly gave rise to the Bavarian Soviet Republic. Although not officially issued by that regime, these overprints remain closely linked to the era’s revolutionary energy and serve as tangible symbols of the transition from royal rule to the early Weimar Republic.
This example is postally used, showing a light cancel that leaves the portrait and overprint bold and legible.
