Description
Bavaria Scott #141 (1919) — Used
This 20 Pfennig blue green overprinted definitive from Bavaria (Scott #141) was issued in 1919 under the short-lived People’s State of Bavaria (Volksstaat Bayern), established after the abdication of King Ludwig III. The dramatic black Gothic overprint “Volksstaat Bayern”—meaning People’s State of Bavaria—was applied to remaining royal-era stamps, symbolizing the revolutionary transformation from monarchy to republican governance following World War I.
Although these stamps were not officially associated with the Bavarian Soviet Republic, they circulated during that same volatile period of social unrest, revolution, and counterrevolution that swept Munich in 1919. The overprints thus stand as vivid artifacts of the transitional months between the fall of the Bavarian monarchy and the rise of the Weimar Republic.
This example is postally used, bearing a clear circular cancel that complements the deep blue-green background and well-defined overprint.
