Bavaria Scott #105 (1911–1919) — Used
This 40 Pfennig olive brown definitive from the Kingdom of Bavaria (Scott #105) features a stately portrait of King Ludwig III, who ruled from 1913 until the abolition of the Bavarian monarchy in 1918. Issued between 1911 and 1919, this series represents Bavaria’s final independent postage before being absorbed into the German Reich’s postal system.
Printed by typography, the design showcases the restrained elegance typical of Bavarian engraving—Ludwig’s portrait framed by a circular medallion, with the inscription “BAYERN” in classical type below. The earthy olive-brown shade, introduced during wartime production, lends the issue a dignified, somber tone reflective of its era.
