Description

Australia — Universal Postal Union Centenary (Scott 597–598)

This mint never hinged two-stamp commemorative set from Australia, cataloged as Scott #597–598, was issued in 1974 to mark the centenary of the Universal Postal Union (1874–1974), celebrating 100 years of international postal cooperation.

The set features striking modern graphic designs by John Copeland, using stylized doves carrying letters as symbols of global communication and peace. Scott #597 (7c) presents a bold, abstract composition in blue, white, and magenta, while Scott #598 (30c) uses a vertical format with repeated dove motifs in warm earth tones. Together, the stamps reflect the clean, graphic design language characteristic of mid-1970s Australian issues.

Printed by the Reserve Bank of Australia, the stamps emphasize simplicity, symbolism, and internationalism, aligning closely with the UPU’s mission.

Both stamps are offered mint never hinged with full original gum. Condition is clean throughout, with fresh color, sharp printing, and intact perforations. A visually appealing matched pair for collectors of Australia, UPU issues, or modern graphic stamp design.
