Description
Australia Scott #177 — Used — 5s “King George VI Coronation” (1937)
Issued in 1937 to mark the coronation of King George VI, this 5-shilling engraved stamp is one of Australia’s most admired high-value commemoratives of the pre-war era. Rendered in a rich purple-brown shade, the design presents a full-length portrait of the newly crowned king in his ceremonial robes, standing regally above the coronation regalia at his feet.
The detailed engraving highlights the elaborate textures of the robes, the sweeping mantle, and the ornate architectural framing—hallmarks of the craftsmanship produced by the Note Printing Branch during this period. High-denomination issues such as this saw comparatively limited postal use, making attractive used examples desirable among Commonwealth collectors.
This stamp is postally used, showing a legible cancellation that leaves most of the portrait unobscured. The color remains strong, and the perforations are intact, offering a pleasing example of this important coronation issue.
An excellent addition for collectors of:
-
British Royal Family
-

-

-
