Design & Significance
This 1972 se-tenant pair commemorates the 25th anniversary of the South Pacific Commission, founded in 1947 to promote social and economic development among Pacific island nations.
-
The upper stamp features a stylized map of the South Pacific with stars representing the member nations linked in cooperation.
-
The lower stamp shows the SPC emblem with a palm tree and a curved white ribbon symbolizing unity and shared progress across the Pacific islands.
Both designs use bold, oceanic blues and greens evocative of the region’s geography and the ideals of regional partnership.
Background
The South Pacific Commission (SPC) — now known as the Pacific Community — was originally formed by six countries (Australia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Papua New Guinea, then on the path to independence, participated in its programs supporting health, education, and infrastructure development across the Pacific.
This issue reflected Papua New Guinea’s growing role in regional cooperation as it prepared for full independence in 1975.
