Description
Issued in 1955, these two airmail from Panama were created to support the global campaign “Mundo Unido Contra La Malaria” (World United Against Malaria).
The design features the caduceus of medicine entwined with a mosquito, symbolizing the fight against malaria — one of the most ambitious international public health efforts of the 1950s. The word “VALE” (valid) is boldly overprinted, signifying authorization for postal use following a surtax change.
-
5¢ + 5¢ rose & carmine — surcharge overprinted “10¢”
-
10¢ + 10¢ blue & violet — surcharge overprinted “20¢”
Proceeds from the surtax supported anti-malaria programs under the direction of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Sanitary Bureau.
Condition: Mint, never hinged (MNH).
