Germany (Allied Occupation)
Germany – Allied Occupation
Following the collapse of Nazi Germany in 1945, the country was divided into four occupation zones—administered by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union. Each zone issued its own distinctive postage stamps, reflecting both local administrative control and the political realities of postwar reconstruction.
Early issues included “General Issue” overprints on existing German stocks, later replaced by newly designed stamps such as the “Posthorn” and “Worker” series. These stamps mark the turbulent transition from wartime devastation to the divided nations that would soon become East and West Germany.
Collectors will find a fascinating variety of designs, overprints, and printings within this category, including issues from:
American and British Zones (Bizone)
French Zone
Soviet Zone
Berlin (Allied Sector)
Each set tells part of the story of Germany’s rebirth under Allied administration—bridging the gap between the Third Reich and the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) in 1949.
