Ciskei
The Ciskei stamp issues form an important part of southern Africa’s late 20th-century postal history, representing a politically charged era of the apartheid system. Ciskei, located in what is now the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, was declared an independent “homeland” by the apartheid government in 1981—though this independence was recognized only by South Africa itself. During its brief existence (1981–1994), Ciskei issued its own postage stamps, featuring native wildlife, cultural scenes, and national symbols intended to project legitimacy and pride. Many designs—such as the African Fish Eagle, Nguni cattle, and Xhosa heritage imagery—were beautifully rendered and locally relevant, making these issues both politically complex and visually striking. When apartheid ended in 1994, Ciskei was reabsorbed into South Africa, and its stamps ceased to be valid. Today, Ciskei issues serve as tangible reminders of a divided past and the artistry that persisted even under contested statehood.
